The "Word of Truth" acts like a sword, incisively dividing and penetrating the thoughts and intentions of our hearts. Fundamentally, life revolves around the heart—around the act of loving. The crucial question is: Do we love enough to actively contend for what is genuinely good and true?
Saint Porphyrios provided a profound perspective: "You don’t become holy by fighting evil. Let evil be. Look towards Christ and that will save you.” This wisdom informs our purpose. Our goal isn't merely to confront evil; it is to fight FOR Truth and individual liberty. Our most potent weapons in this endeavor are our words and our good deeds.
The trajectory of societies often moves from necessity to invention, then to prosperity. However, prosperity can subtly lead to complacency, which breeds apathy, then dependence, and ultimately, a return to collapse or even bondage.
Presently, we find ourselves in an age characterized by entitlement and dependence. Our culture increasingly looks to the government as a benevolent deity, expecting it to provide for every need.
When this occurs, we inadvertently exchange our liberty for tyranny. It's a critical understanding: government primarily exists to serve its own interests. To believe otherwise is a deceptive, even destructive, notion. A proper government, by contrast, is very small, designed only to provide the fundamental architecture of liberty and freedom.
Consider the ancient wisdom of a Desert Father, who advised a monk grown complacent: "Go, beseech God to stir up warfare so that you regain the affliction and humility that you used to have, for it is by warfare that the soul makes progress." This reminds us that true progress often arises from struggle. The glory of battle—the internal and external struggle for righteous principles—is precisely what refines our soul.
